Bonk Retrospectus: Bonk's Revenge
Travel back in time with Bonk's Revenge

by  Lily Luu

Welcome to another episode of Bonk Retrospectus! Last time, we took a look at Bonk’s first foray into the jungle with Bonk’s Adventure.  We laughed, we cried, we butted heads with King Drool and his minions, all while saving the day.  Like my favorite sci-fi movie of all time, it was a family affair as King Drool III, King Drool’s grandson, decided to strike back in Bonk’s Revenge.

The 'too cool for school' box art for Bonk's Revenge

On the outset of Bonk's Revenge, King Drool III has captured half the moon and is in the process of building a Monster army to take over the Earth. Along with a huge turtle, a figure skating dinosaur, tiki mask guy, and a Captain, Bonk has his work cut out for him as sets out to get his revenge and take back the Earth and Moon!  With new power ups, bonus stages, and tougher enemies, Bonk’s Revenge takes you on a satisfyingly difficult journey.  And unlike Bonk’s Adventure, Bonk’s Revenge’s graphics were similar to the comic Bonk originated from.

In Bonk’s Revenge, there were familiar stages with new enemies and vice-versa.  There was an ice stage that was slippery and a snow stage where enemies were ready to pelt snow balls at you! There was the original volcano stage with new pterodactyls, fire balls shooting from the ground, and even man-eating dinosaurs that loved to chew on Bonk’s head!

Now, I’m not sure if this was intentional, but all of the little skull guys seem to be cosplaying. They can be considered uniforms, but to me they were cosplaying as maids, winter wonderland, miners, and my personal favorite, sailors.

Bonk’s Revenge also introduced us to new and improved transformations. You can see how it paved the way for the all new Bonk: Brink of Extinction in this regard. One particular transformation occurred by eating a small portion of meat. Once consumed, he turned into Nuclear Bonk!  As Nuclear Bonk, he head butted enemies and created a cloud that floats towards enemies and freezes them.  Even better, when Nuclear Bonk lands on his head, the enemies on screen freeze! The transformations don’t stop there! He also turns into my personal favorite Bonk transformation: Butthead Bonk. Most likely a case of indigestion, Butthead Bonk destroys enemies with his fire breath.

First Stage of Bonk's Revenge

Bonk’s Revenge kept the fun that Bonk’s Adventure had, but with more stages, enemies, and strange new Bonk transformations.
